Australia trip cost guide

How much does a trip to Melbourne cost?

Compare MEL and AVV arrivals, central accommodation and the current Free Tram Zone. Separate Melbourne markets and laneways from regional driving.

Lodging-only examples for 3, 5, 7 nights

Planning estimates for two travelers sharing one room, lodging only. They are not live quotes and not a total trip budget: flights, food, transfers, local transport, activities and fees are excluded. A price you enter in the calculator always replaces these estimates. Totals are calculated from the nightly rate and rounded to whole euros.

Arriving in Melbourne

Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine (MEL) and Avalon Airport (AVV) are different gateways. Check which one is on the flight booking before selecting a coach or road transfer. The public-transport authority identifies airport bus services and SkyBus connections; your hotel journey continues beyond the coach arrival point. A Southern Cross-area stay may simplify that leg, while another neighbourhood can need a tram, train or vehicle.

Airport transfers are a separate budget line. Where a reliable fare is not available, Fareveal shows it as unknown rather than zero.

Getting around Melbourne

Melbourne combines a central walking itinerary with tram, train and bus journeys to surrounding districts. Check the current Free Tram Zone map for the stops used on your route: the name does not mean every tram journey in Melbourne is free. Travel beyond the zone needs the relevant ticketing arrangement. Plan a laneway and market day together, and give suburban or coastal outings their own transport allowance.

A budget trade-off

A central hotel puts the laneways and city sights close to the main programme, while a stay in another district can offer a different restaurant and neighbourhood experience. Compare both with the daily journeys rather than assuming one location always saves money. Car hire may belong to a regional road trip, but it adds parking and collection decisions to a city-only visit. Keep those two travel styles as separate scenarios.

Attractions and discretionary spending

Queen Victoria Market and the central laneways offer a city-focused itinerary with flexible food and shopping choices. Add museum interiors or other ticketed experiences according to your interests rather than automatically buying a package. An excursion beyond Melbourne changes the scale of the day: it needs its own transport, departure location and return plan. A city tram pass should not be assumed to include an airport coach or a regional guided excursion.

Two ways this budget can change

  • City weekend: choose a base for the centre, compare the MEL or AVV coach journey and combine laneways, the market and selected interiors.
  • Melbourne plus regional driving: keep the city stay separate from car-hire days, adding collection, parking and the regional route to that second scenario.

Fees and easy-to-miss costs

Fareveal does not yet publish a verified local-fee amount for Melbourne. Confirm any mandatory charges on your booking before treating a total as final. Entry and visa rules depend on each traveler.

Worth checking

  • Check MEL versus AVV on the booking.
  • Map the airport-coach arrival point to the hotel.
  • Use the current Free Tram Zone map for every planned stop.
  • Confirm ticketing for journeys beyond the zone.
  • Keep regional excursions and airport coaches separate from city transit.
