United States trip cost guide

How much does a trip to San Francisco cost?

Compare SFO or OAK arrival, BART-to-hotel connections, city transit and cable cars, then plan Alcatraz and neighbourhood days around selected experiences.

Lodging-only examples for 3, 5, 7 nights

Planning estimates for two travelers sharing one room, lodging only. They are not live quotes and not a total trip budget: flights, food, transfers, local transport, activities and fees are excluded. A price you enter in the calculator always replaces these estimates. Totals are calculated from the nightly rate and rounded to whole euros.

Arriving in San Francisco

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has a BART station in the International Terminal, with AirTrain access from the airport terminals. BART serves Downtown San Francisco, but the destination station and the walk to your hotel still matter. Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport (OAK) is a different gateway. Compare the complete arrival route rather than giving both airports one generic rail transfer in the budget.

Airport transfers are a separate budget line. Where a reliable fare is not available, Fareveal shows it as unknown rather than zero.

Getting around San Francisco

Build neighbourhood days rather than expecting one rail system to reach every sight. Downtown and Union Square, Chinatown and North Beach, and the western parks call for different walking and local-transit combinations. BART's regional role is distinct from Muni's city services and the cable cars. Check payment compatibility for the transport you intend to use: the BART airport guide explicitly warns that not every Bay Area operator accepts the same contactless bank-card payment.

A budget trade-off

A Downtown stay near BART simplifies one part of arrival, while Fisherman's Wharf or a residential neighbourhood may better suit the time you want to spend there. Hills and the final hotel approach deserve consideration when carrying bags. Staying across the bay is a regional travel choice, not simply a cheaper equivalent central room. Include the actual repeated crossings before judging whether the accommodation saving works for your sightseeing pattern.

Attractions and discretionary spending

Alcatraz is a selected island experience requiring a planned departure, rather than something to add casually between distant neighbourhood stops. Use the National Park Service guidance to identify the correct visit arrangements. A Golden Gate outing, cable-car ride and museum visit create different transport needs; choose the anchors first and cluster surrounding exploring around them. Keep a flexible waterfront session rather than buying a pass for attractions you cannot comfortably fit.

Two ways this budget can change

  • Downtown transit break: arrive at SFO by BART when it suits the hotel, check the last walk and group Chinatown with North Beach. Treat Muni and cable-car choices separately from the airport fare product.
  • Waterfront-and-island stay: select lodging for the waterfront experiences you will repeat, reserve the Alcatraz visit and plan the airport connection beyond BART's station. If comparing an East Bay room, include the regional crossings and evening return.

Fees and easy-to-miss costs

Fareveal does not yet publish a verified local-fee amount for San Francisco. Confirm any mandatory charges on your booking before treating a total as final. Entry and visa rules depend on each traveler.

Worth checking

  • SFO versus OAK arrival
  • BART station and hotel approach
  • BART versus Muni payment acceptance
  • Alcatraz departure booking
  • Cable-car ticket scope
  • Regional return journey
