Lodging-only examples for 3, 5, 7 nights

Planning estimates for two travelers sharing one room, lodging only. They are not live quotes and not a total trip budget: flights, food, transfers, local transport, activities and fees are excluded. A price you enter in the calculator always replaces these estimates. Totals are calculated from the nightly rate and rounded to whole euros.

Arriving in Washington, D.C.

Washington's airport code changes the whole arrival plan. Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA) has Blue and Yellow Line access, while Washington Dulles (IAD) connects to the Silver Line with a terminal walkway. Baltimore/Washington (BWI) is another journey: WMATA's guide describes an airport shuttle and MARC rail connection to Union Station. Confirm the flight airport before comparing accommodation or applying a single city-airport transfer assumption.

Airport transfers are a separate budget line. Where a reliable fare is not available, Fareveal shows it as unknown rather than zero.

Getting around Washington, D.C.

The National Mall covers a substantial sightseeing area, and the convenient Metro stop depends on which end and museum you want. Group museum visits and memorial walking rather than crossing the Mall repeatedly between reservations. Georgetown, Capitol Hill and other neighbourhoods call for their own route planning. A hotel near a useful Metro station can be more practical than a broad promise of proximity to Downtown, especially after an evening away from the Mall.

A budget trade-off

A central base favours repeated museum visits and walking; an Arlington or other regional base may suit the airport or friends but creates additional journeys. Evaluate the actual daily routes before selecting a lower room quote. Free-admission museums can reduce the need for paid attractions, but this does not make the entire visit free: meals, transport, guided experiences and selected private attractions remain distinct choices.

Attractions and discretionary spending

The Smithsonian publishes free admission for its DC-area museums, with timed-entry requirements at selected sites. Reserve the needed slot even where the entry has no admission charge. A museum near the Mall and a collection elsewhere in the region are not automatically easy back-to-back visits. Choose a manageable set, leave time for security and collection viewing, and keep monument walking flexible around the fixed entries rather than booking every available hour.

Two ways this budget can change

  • Mall-centred visit: choose a hotel with practical Metro access, reserve the selected Smithsonian entries and combine nearby museum visits with memorial walking. Keep meals and transport visible even where the attraction admission is free.
  • Regional base: stay near the airport, friends or a preferred district, calculate the actual routes into the city and plan BWI or IAD arrival with all connections. Avoid using a DCA transfer assumption for another gateway.

Fees and easy-to-miss costs
